  • CAA refers toCitizen Amendment Act. It was passed by the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019.
  • Under this act, migrants who had entered India by 31 December 2014, and had suffered "religious persecution or fear of religious persecution" in their country of origin were made eligible for citizenship.

  • NRC refers to National Register of Citizens. It is a registry maintained by the Government of India containing names & certain relevant information for the identification of genuine Indian citizens in the state of Assam.
  • The register was specifically made for Assam.

Explanation:

  • CAA is an act passed by Indian Parliament to amend the citizenship Act of 1955. It grants citizenship to the religious minorities who are persecuted in the neighbouring countries. The specific minorities included in the bill are Sikhs, Hindus, Parsis, Jains, Christian and Buddhist.  It does not include Muslims or Sri Lankan Tamils or Buddhist refugees from Tibet.  
  • It was enacted into law on 12 the December 2019.
  • NRC means National Register of Citizens,  It will be a record of citizens of Indian. The citizens would have to provide a set of documents before a cut off date to get included in the register. Those who fail to provide the documents will not be able to avail the benefits of the CAA if they claim to be a religious minorities who have fled from the neighbouring countries to escape persecution.  
  • CAA led to widespread protests all over India as the people  believe that it discriminates against the poor and Muslims who do not have access to proofs of citizenship. They consider it to be unconstitutional.  
  • They also believe that Muslims and poor Indians will be rendered stateless.
