CALCINATION

ACCORDING TO DICTIONARY:-

The process of heating a substance to a high temperature but below the melting or fusing point, causing loss of moisture, reduction or oxidation, and dissociation into simpler substances. The term was originally applied to the method of driving off carbon dioxide from limestone to obtain lime (calcium oxide). Calcination is also used to extract metals from ores.

EXPLANATION:-

The ore is heated to a high temperature below its melting point in the absence of air or in a limited supply of air. The organic matter, moisture, volatile impurities like carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide are expelled from the ore. It makes the ore porous. For example, zinc carbonate decomposes to give zinc oxide and carbon dioxide.
