Carbohydrates:

  • It is one of the basic food groups (others being proteins and fats) that literally contains substances such as sugars, starches and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products.
  • However, chemically a carbohydrate is a biomolecule made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
  • There are three classes of carbohydrates:
  1. monosaccharides
  2. disaccharides
  3. polysaccharides.

Lactose (milk sugar) is a disaccharide consisting of the monomers glucose and galactose.

Sucrose (table sugar) is the most common disaccharide, which is composed of the monomers glucose and fructose.
