Chromatography is the most useful and modern technique extensively used to separate mixtures into their components, purify compounds and also test the purity of compounds. Chromatography depends on the distribution of the mixture between two phases. One of the phases is called a fixed phase while the other is called the moving phase. Different constituents migrate through the fixed phase at different rates. The mixture to be separated is dissolved in the moving phase and passed one the fixed phase which may become an absorbent column or a paper strip. The moving phase may be a liquid or a gas.
