To understand the topic crop variety improvement in India, one must know the term crop variety.
There are genetically modified plants which can be highly beneficial for the mankind. The process of modifying the plants genetically for the satisfaction of the food needs of the mankind can be termed as crop variety.
This is very important in the present world scenario and this is mainly because of the fact that the land resources in the world are dwindling while the population is growing day by day.
In India, this is even more important as India has the second largest population in the world.
After the green revolution in India, it became self reliant in food production. There are several objectives of crop variety improvement.
One of the several objectives can be to develop the varieties of the crops that can have high yield and also stable in nature.
Another objective can be to develop the crops that have values of nutrition that is high in number.
They can be also taken as the advantages of developing genetically modified crops and they are highly beneficial to the mankind.
Since the resources are land is less and finding fertile can also be tough one must look at these avenues to satisfy the needs of the ever increasing population.

Various measures have been taken for crop variety improvement in India and India has been quite successful in achieving this.
Many of the crops in India get damaged by the pests. These pests damages the crops and they cannot be utilised later.
This leads to huge wastage and this could be avoided if proper measures are in place.
In order to reduce wastage of these sort, one of such methods adopted is the crop variety improvement.

The Indian Agricultural research Institute is the institution that carries out activities in this field. They have been able to produce different varieties of crops which are pest resistant or can grow under conditions which are not native to their breed.
Wheat and rice are examples where different varieties have been produced. These varieties are quite famous with the farmers and have been instrumental in reducing the wastage of food grains due to infestation by the pests.

The wastage has been reduced by around 10%. This is shown by a research conducted. So, the varieties developed by the Indian Institute of Agricultural research have done wonders for the Indian farmers and the people of the Indian subcontinent as a whole. Further research is going on in this field.

These varieties could be useful in the areas where there is scanty rainfall.
Pearl millet can be an example for a crop that can be grown in area where the rainfall is less than essentially required for the crop, in other words the rainfall occurs only in limited quantity.
Even some of the maize varieties have been produced. There are varieties of this crop which are known as early maturity. These type of varieties can be highly useful for regions where there is scant rainfall or no water resource.
This is because they mature early and hence can be harvested early. If the harvest period is advanced then the land can be used for the cultivation of another crop.
Also the labour required for such variety of crop is very less. Hence the costs can also be reduced. This can be highly beneficial to the farmers cultivating the crop. This also creates flexibility for the farmers cultivating the crops as the crops can be harvested in lesser amount of time.
The profit margins of the farmers can be increased and the ultimate need of food security can also be solved.
Hence, the Indian Institute of agriculture Institute must take more efforts for crop variety improvement programme in India to authorise the food security of the nation.
