A current rating is the maximum amps or the amount of current that a fuse allows to pass or flow through the circuit.
A fuse is usually made of any metal having low temperature and low resistance. current flows only through closed circuit and not through open circuit. so when excess current flows through the close circuit, the fuse melts and disconnects the the closed loop(circuit) formed. As there is no connection, the excess current flow stops and the electric appliances are prevented from any damage.
Hope the doubt is cleared.
