The cutting down trees in large scale is known as DEFORESTATION.

It's causes in colonial rule are₋ the tribal people did agriculture and they  didn't know how to fertilize the used the field and they moved to other place and again cut down trees .The crop which left in the before field which they left was burnt and this method of agriculture is known as Slash and Burn agriculture. After the British took control over the forest using forest laws they didn't allow the the farmers live in the forest. If they want firewood they had to pay huge taxes and then enter the forest .If they wanted to enter the forest without paying taxes they had to cut wood in forest for free of cost which means that they will not have to take livelihood.

Its long but its the correct information that I learned from my history text book
