The total number of independent modes(ways) in which a system can possess energy is called Degree of freedom.
Diatomic gas- A molecule of diatomic gas has five degrees of freedom (3 tanslational and 2 rotational).

Degree of freedom
Thhe number of independent ways in which a molecule or an atom can exhibit motion or have energy is called its degree of freedom.
Else in simple terms "The number of independent coordinates required for a system is called a degree of freedom..."
It is denoted by "f"..
Types of degree of freedom :
- Translational degree of freedom.
- Rotational degree of freedom.
- vibrational degree of freedom.
For diamtomic Gases :
diatomic gases include O2, cl2 , N2 etc.
So by taking each type of degrees into account let's calculate,
- Transitional : 3
- Rotational : 2
So totally Degree of freedom will be :
2+3 = 5
Hence degree of freedom for a diamtomic Gas is 5 at low temperature.
