A diagonal relation on a set A is the relation ∼ defined by
x∼y if and only if x=y.
It is called a diagonal relation because if you draw the Cartesian product X×X, the points in the relation are precisely the points on the diagonal of the diagram.
The diagonal relation is always an equivalence relation; in particular, it is reflexive. A relation is reflexive if and only if it includes the diagonal relation as a subset.
