Diffraction - It is a process by which a beam of light or any other wave is spread out when passed through a narrow aperture.

  • The phenomenon of bending light around the corners of an obstacle or edge is called diffraction
  • condition of diffraction - Source of light should be monochromatic
  • the wavelength of light should be comparable to that of the aperture or obstacle.
  • condition for secondary maxima - asinθ = (2n-1)λ/2
  • condition for secondary minima - asinθ = nλ
  • where n= 1,2,3...
  • a is the size of an aperture or obstacle.
  • diffraction not only occurs with light waves it may also occur with sound waves.
