Democracy refers to the form of government elected by the people of a country themselves. It is derived from the Greek word demokratia combining demos (common people) and kratos (power).

New Zealand became the first nation to grant equal voting rights to all its citizens as early as 1893.

According to the 16th president of the USA. Abraham Lincoln, democracy is 'a government of the people, by the people and for the people'.

There are two types of democracy:-

1. Direct Democracy

2. Indirect Democracy

If the government is elected and run directly by the people, it is called direct democracy.

This, however, may not be practiced today, especially in countries with a large population.

In direct democracy, all the members or beneficiaries of a democratic unit of the government participate in decision making process. This can be seen in the case of Gram Sabha in which villagers come together and take decisions for themselves.
