The gene which decides the appearance of an organism only in the presence of an alternative gene is called a Dominant gene.

- A dominant gene is the one that dominates in the inheritance pattern and shows its characteristic surpassing the other gene.

- Recessive gene is the one that fails to show it's characteristic in the inheritance and is hence termed recessive .

For example in a mono hybrid cross between tall plant ( TT ) and short plant ( tt ) , tall gene dominates .
