what do you mean by excited state and ground state of an electron??

  • Electrons in an atom occupy stationary orbits [states] of fixed energy at different distances from nucleus.
  • The lowest state [orbit] of an electron is ground state .
  • As the states[orbits] increase , that energy levels are known as excited state.
  • In simple words , the orbits [states] near to the nucleus are known as Ground State and which are far away are known as Excited State.
  • If the electron [ from ground state ] jumps to a higher energy level i.e to the excited state it absorbs some energy.
  • If the electron [ from excited state ] jumps to a lower energy level i.e to the ground state it emits some energy.
