Answer:

A ‘body cavity’ is the fluid-filled enclosed space ‘created in an organism’ which holds the internal organs.

A true body cavity or coelom;

  • Originates from the mesodermal germ layer of the embryo of the triploblastic organisms and is present in the mesoderm.
  • It is lined with peritoneum or the coelomic fluid.
  • Nutrients are circulated through the blood inside the coelom
  • Organisms, both vertebrates and invertebrates, present with true body cavity or coelom are called as coelomates or eucoelomates like the “arthropods, molluscans, chordates” etc

A false body cavity or pseudocoelom;

  • Originates from the blastocoel of an embryo of the triploblastic organisms and is located between the endoderm and mesoderm.
  • It is partially lined with coelomic or peritoneal fluid
  • Transport of nutrients is by diffusion and osmosis and not circulation
  • Invertebrate organisms, present with false body cavity or pseudocoelom are called as pseudocoelomates like from “phylum Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Entoprocta” etc.
