The Fischer projection, given by by Emil Fischer in 1891, is a 2-D representation of 3-D organic molecule by projection. Fischer projections were originally proposed for the depiction of carbohydrates and used by chemists, particularly in organic chemistry and biochemistry.
A Fischer projection is used to differentiate between L- and D- molecules.
They are not prefferd for non - carbohydrates compounds as the drawings are ambiguous to draw.
In a Fischer projection, all horizontal bonds project toward the viewer, while vertical bonds project away from the viewer.
