Friction is the resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another. It is not a fundamental force, like gravity or electromagnetism. Instead, scientists believe it is the result of the electromagnetic attraction between charged particles in two touching surfaces.

Friction is a contact force, applied between two surfaces that have relation motion.

Friction always opposes the relative motion by applying a force in opposite direction.

It is a self adjusting force. It first increases with the application of external force and then becomes constant by attaining a maximum possible force.
