Gilded monuments means gold plated monuments and they are built by the royal kings and princes to show their powers and prosperity.

The kings and princes got monuments made out of marble and gilded gold to remind the coming generations of their rule these monuments are called gilded monuments. All of them want to be remembered long after their death,so they got the monuments erected.
