As per I know it is a GRAVITATIONAL potential .. BUT ONE can think in a different way suppose you have a watch put it on the shelf make it fall from certain height that gain in energy will be converted into the kinetic energy of the body this one can have a over all look that GRAVITY is applying a force downwards which is making the body to gain kinetic energy
