Green Chemistry -
- Green Chemistry, also called Sustainable chemistry, is a branch of chemical research and engineering that works on the design of products and processes that minimizes the use and the generation of hazardous chemical substances in industrial works.
- It has its application rooted in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry.
The basic aims of Green Chemistry are as follows -
- Prevention of waste formation - It works on the prevention of the formation of waste rather than the clean-up of the same afterward. It emphasizes stopping the source of pollution that in the future may cause the formation of hazardous by-products.
- Designing safer chemicals and products - Such products are tried to synthesize which retain their effectiveness with simultaneous reduction of toxicity if any, associated with the products.
- Design for energy efficiency - Energy requirements are recognized and their effects on the environment and economy are minimized through synthesis conducted at ambient temperature and pressure.
- Use of renewable feedstocks - Raw materials or feedstocks are made to be renewable rather than depleting wherever technically and economically possible.
- Emphasis on degradation - Chemical products are designed so that after their use they go under degradation and do not persist in the environment.
