The Green Revolution was introduced in the late 1960s to the Indian Farmers for the cultivation of wheat and rice using higher yielding variety seeds.

Advantages:

  • HYV seeds promised to produce much greater amounts of grain on a single plant.
  • The same piece of land would produce far larger quantites of foograins than earlier.

Disadvantages:

  • Green Revolution is associated with the loss of soil fertility due to increased use of chemical fertilizers.
  • Continuous use of graound water for tubewell irrigation has reduced the water table below the ground.
  • Enivrontmental resources like soi fertility and ground water are built up over mnay years. Once destroyed, it is very difficult to restore them.

Hope it helps :)
