✴Much of the terrestrial radiation is reflected towards the earth, mainly by the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere and by the clouds.

✴As a result, the heat cannot escape into space and gets trapped on the earth. This effect is similar to the heating of a greenhouse.Hence , it is known as the greenhouse effect and the gases causing it are called greenhouse gases.

  1. The greenhouse effect is defined as when the Earth's atmosphere becomes thick with gases and substances which trap the sun's radiation, making the Earth warmer.

  3. The greenhouse effect is a warming of Earth's surface and the air above it.
  4. It is caused by gases in the air that trap energy from the Sun.
  5. These heat-trapping gasesare called greenhouse gases. ... Without the greenhouse effect, Earth would be too cold for life to exist.
