Greetings refers to the act of wishing a person politely when you meet him or her. This could be based on the time of day or just a casual acknowledgment of meeting the person.

For example, the term Good Morning is used to greet a person when you meet him/her for the first time in the morning. On the other hand, when you are planning to have a telephonic conversation with someone, Hello is a good way to greet the person at the other end before you get started.
