Answer:

The plant consists of a number of horizontal cylinders made up of cast iron. Each cylinder has a rotating shaft fitted with blades. A fresh and dry sample of slaked lime or calcium Hydroxide is introduced through the hopper at the top. As the shaft rotates, the blades attached push the slaked lime from from one cylinder to the next cylinder. A current of dry chlorine is slowly introduced from the bottom. As it rises up, it comes in contact with calcium hydroxide to form bleaching powder which can be taken out from an an outlet in the lowermost cylinder. An exit has been provided from the outlet of the waste gases at the top.

It is process for the preparation of bleaching powder ( calcium Chloro hypochlorite).

HasenClever's plant is used in which calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] reacts with chlorine gas [Cl2] to form bleaching powder and water. Following is the equation for the above mentioned reaction:

Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 ------> CaOCl2 +H2O
