Answer:

In comparing two solutions of unequal solute concentration, the solution with the higher solute concentration is hypertonic, and the solution with the lower solute concentration is hypotonic. Solutions of equal solute concentration are isotonic.

Hypotonic solution :

  • If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, meaning that the outside solution is very dilute, the cell will gain water by osmosis ( endosmosis ) .Such a solution is called hypotonic solution.

  • In this case the cell is likely to swell up.

❑ Isotonic solution :

  • If the medium surrounding the cell has exactly the same water concentration as the cell, there will be no net movement of water across the cell membrane. Such a solution is called isotonic solution .

  • In this case there is no overall movement of water.

  • The cell will stay the same size.
