what do you mean by interference of light ? Explain in brief the young's double slit experiment.
Answers
Explanation:
When two different waves of light having the same frequency , same wavelength and same amplitude are moving in the same direction falls upon each other , the interference of waves takes place .
If the crest of one wave falls upon the crest of another and trough of one wave falls upon the trough of another , the amplitude of resultant wave increases , It is called constructive interference .
If the crest of one wave falls upon the trough of another and vice versa . It is destructive interference .
In case of Young's double slit experiment , there are two fine slits placed very close to each other .
When two waves from same source passes through these slits , interference takes place . By which we obtain bright and dark fringes on the screen due to constructive and destructive interference .
The position of any bright fringe can be calculated by the relation
x = nλD/d
here n is the number of bright fringe from mean position
D is the distance between fine slits and screen
d is the distance between the slits .
Similarly position of dark fringe from center
x = (2n - 1)λD/2d
