Another technique is based on the fact that a few foetul blood cells leak across the placenta into the mother's blood stream. A blood sample from the mother provides enough foetul cells that can be tested for genetic disorders. The foetul cells are identified with specific antibodies that bind to proteins on the surface of the foetul cells.

Almost all dedectable foetul disorders cannot be treated in the uterus and many cannot be corrected even after birth. The parents in such cases face a difficult decision whether to ebd pregnancy or cope with defective child.
