Answer:

Explanation:

Ionization Enthalpy of elements is the amount of energy that an isolated gaseous atom requires to lose an electron in its ground state. Losing of electrons results in the formation of cations.

ionization enthalpy decrease while going top to bottom and increases while going left to right in the periodic table.

It is because,

while going left to right, size of the atom decreases hence attraction between +vely charged nucleus and Valence -vely charged electron increase,    results into increase in ionization energy

Similarly while going top to bottom, size of the atom increase, resulting in lesser attraction ( also more shielding effect: repulsion between valence and inner shell electrons which decreases the +ve pull from nucleus). Hence lesser and decreased ionization energy.

unit of the Ionization enthalpy is  kilojoules per mole (kJ/mol) or kilocalories per mole (kcal/mol).

a) increasing first ionization enthalpy: N>O>P>S

( Ionization enthalpy of N>O due to its np# i.e. stable half filled configuration)

b) increasing non-metallic character: O>N>S>P

(It is the tendency of gaining/ attracting electron i.e. nonmetallic character or electronegativity)
