Isotopes

  • Isotopes were discovered by F. Soddy.
  • Isotopes are those atoms which have the same atomic number but differ in their mass numbers.
  • Isotopes have identical chemical properties but differ in physical properties.
  • Example-

Protium (₁H¹)

Deuterium (₁H²)

Tritium (₁H³)

Isobars

  • Isobars were discovered by Alfred Walter Stewart
  • Isobars are those atoms which have the same mass number but differ in their atomic numbers.
  • Isobars possess different chemical and physical properties.
  • Examples- ( ₁₈Ar⁴⁰, ₁₉K⁴⁰ and ₂₀Ca⁴⁰ ) , ( ₅₂Te¹³⁰, ₅₆Ba¹³⁰ )
