The word “liberalism” ( derived etymologically from “libertas” in Latin) originally meant “belief in freedom rather than too much right or left wing restriction of freedom by legislation.
However the word “liberalism” is used (or misused?) politically in very many countries to designate very many different political opinions, attitudes and/or parties.
US Americans tend to misuse the word “liberalism” to designate socialism, which they regard as a negative word indicating the completion of communist Marxist-Leninist ideals whereby nothing is privately owned and everything state owned and organised for the benefit of the “commune” of society thus ignoring innate human selfish personal ambition and individual freedom.
In Europe the word “liberal” is regarded as politically “blue” (= minarchistic) rather than “red” ( = advocating empathetic social redistribution) or “black” ( = advocating a capitalistic economy based totally on supply, demand and profit and thus ignoring innate human empathy).
Many other countries have even more different interpretations of the meaning of the word (or notion?) “liberalism”.
So the confusion and polarisation in this world is enormous and growing !
