there were 2 types of Mahajans. one mahajan is the surname or the family name of some people living in punjab and J&K belt. But the other one is the JOB TITLE not the surname. Mahajan or the money lenders as refered in the article was a job title , a business and has nothing to do with the people with mahajan surname. The people with Mahajan surname were traders and was a high and had a respectable position in the society , thats why called MAHAJAN or the great people. Whereas people involved in money lending wether or not mahajans by surname were referred to as mahajans.
