There are 3 germ layers in the developing embryo : ectoderm ( outer) mesoderm ( middle) endoderm ( inner)

When the skeletal system develops from mesoderm it is called mesodermal skeleton eg bones and cartilage in humans , other mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians,Pisces.

When it develops from ectoderm ( not endoderm) it is called ectodermal skeleton

Eg exoskeleton of insects

Note: endoderm gives mainly the digestive system glands lungs and other viscera.

Hope this helps
