metameric segmentation The repetition of organs and tissues at intervals along the body of an animal, thus dividing the body into a linear series of similar parts or segments (metameres). Metameric segmentation is thought to have arisen as an adaptation to more efficient locomotion.
haemocoel (plural haemocoels) The cavity, between the organs of arthropods and molluscs, through which the blood etc . The haemocoel is the main body cavity of invertebrates, such as insects. Insects do not possess an arrangement of blood vessels such as those in mammals. This means the organs do not have a specific blood supply but are suspended in the blood and receive nutrients as the blood 'washes' around the organs.
