Modernization is the term that refers to the development of a traditional society into a modern society. It is the movement towards modern ideas and lifestyle than traditional ones.

Nationalism is the social, political and economic effort to promote the sovereignty of the nation/homeland.

The Vietnamese Nationalist Movement towards modernization was led by two ideologies, presented by two Vietnamese nationalists;

(i) Phan Boi Chau's Ideology: Phan Boi Chau was of the belief to stay under monarchy. He rather wanted Vietnam to become a constitutional monarchy. He believed that the monarchy would help them in order to resist the French. He wanted traditional values of Vietnam to be secured and opposed western culture and trends.

(ii) Phan Chu Trinh's Ideology: Phan Chu Trinh believed in the concept of equality, liberty and fraternity. He wanted to overthrow the monarchy and expected no help from it against the French. He was in favour of modernization and western trends and culture.

As a whole, while Phan Chu Trinh wanted complete independence from Vietnamese monarchy and French invaders, Phan Boi Chau wanted monarchy to remain but French to leave. One seeked monarch help and one opposed it. Chau wanted traditional values and culture while Trinh wanted modernization in the country. Both were nationalists, but their definition of nationalism differed.
