Negative acceleration is just acceleration in the direction opposite to the direction which we have taken as +ve.
In negative acceleration velocity may increase or decrease but in retardation velocity always decreases. suppose a car is on a road then suddenly it changes its direction to opposite to that in which it was going then it started acceleration so acceleration is -ve but velocity is increasing in -ve direction
