When we deal with the reflection of light in spherical mirrors, we use a set of sign conventions called New Cartesian Sign Convention. The pole (P) of the mirror is considered as the origin and the principal axis of the mirror is taken as the x-axis. There are some conventions (assumptions) taken which are as follows.
(i) The object is always placed to te left of he mirror.
(ii) All distances paralell to the principle axis are measured from the pole of the mirror.
(iii) All distances measured to the right of the origin are taken as positive while those measured to left of the origin are taken as negative.
(iv) Distance measured perpendicular to and above the principal axis are taken as positive while distances taken perpendicular to and below are taken as negative.
