An area of land between the borders of two countries or between two armies during a war and which is not controlled by either is a no man's land. Two classic examples of No Man's Land are the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea, and the UN buffer zone that stands between the Greek and Turkish-controlled territories in Cyprus - both born of conflicts that were never entirely resolved.
