On Killing a tree is the poem you can find in the English books of CBSE students pursuing class 9.

The meaning of “not so much pain will do it” line in the poem is that despite humans cut down the barks of threes into small pieces, but this cannot destroy the whole tree.

The branch or bark of the tree that is cut by the people would bleed like humans do when are sapped.
