Necessary required for optical activity:

  • The compound must contain an asymmetrical carbon atom.
  • The molecule must contain a chiral axis.
  • The molecule must possess a chiral plane.
  • The molecule does not possess any elements of symmetry. 

Explain with example:

For example, d-ethambutol treats tuberculosis, while l-ethambutol causes blindness. Optical activity is the interaction of these enantiomers with plane-polarized light.
