Explanation:

Osmosis is the movement of a solvent across a semipermeable membrane toward a higher concentration of solute (lower concentration of solvent). ... When a cell is submerged in water, the water molecules pass through the cell membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high solute concentration.

Question

what do you mean by osmosis?

Answer

The process by which solvent molecules pass from a solution of lower concentration to a solution of higher concentration through a semipermeable membrane. It is a passive process which takes place without any expenditure of energy.

It is generally of two types:

Exosmosis →The process of exosmosis denotes the type of osmosis where the direction of the water or solvent is outside of a vessel or cell. It takes place if the water potential in the outside of the cell is lesser than inside the cells.

Endosmosis :Endosmosis is a process by which the water or the solvent will move inside the cell.

Hint: the phenomenon of osmosis was discovered by Prefer and it tells about the movement of a solvent across a semipermeable membrane .it is a special case of diffusion .

Note: reverse osmosis involves applying additional pressure to the water so that it moves from hypotonic solution . by this method salts can be removed from the saline water.
