A participle is that form of the verb which partakes of the nature both of a verb and of an adjective. Also, the phrase introduced by the participle is called participle phrase.

Here are a few examples of present participle:

We met her mother dropping her kids to school;

The thief, thinking that all was safe, came out from dark.

These examples of present participle end in -ing represent an action as going on or incomplete or imperfect.

Past participle represents a completed action or state of the thing spoken of. Here are a few examples:

Time misspent is time lost;

We saw a donkey burdened with 100bricks.

Participles which are used as simple qualifying adjectives in front of a noun are known as Participle Adjectives.

For instance:

Education

He had a burdened expression;

Her tattered coat needed mending.
