The population density is broadly referred to as the number of people living in per unit area of the available land. Or, it is also called the concentration of people per square kilometer of area.

Following is a brief assessment of India's population distribution by density:

North India:

  • According to the 2019 Census, the average population density of North India which comprises of six Indian States is about 267 persons per sq. km.

South India:

  • The present-day population density of South India is around 463 persons per sq. kilometers which is more than that of North India.

West India:

  • The average population density of west India is 290 persons per sq. kilometers.

East India:

  • The population in this region appears to be concentrated in a small region as the population density of the region is 625 persons per sq. km.

Thus, it can be concluded that north India has the lowest population density and east India has the highest of that.
