Indian food security system, established by the Government of India under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is to distribute subsidized food and non-food items to India's poor. This scheme was first launched in February 1944, during the Second World War and was launched in the current form in June 1947.

Public Distribution System is a scheme launched by government of India which is used to distribute food items and other necessary items to poor at low rates. The PDS is in very good condition at present.
EXPLANATION:
- The government of India has launched a scheme called Public Distribution System in order to distribute food items like rice, wheat, pulses, salt, and cooking oil to poor people particularly Below Poverty Line cardholders are given at subsidized rates.
- It is also used in distribution of non-food items like kerosene. It is launched under Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
- At present, the condition of Public Distribution System is very good in India because several PDS centers are being opened even in remote villages so, that the help can reach to poor people.
- Due to this system, India was able to successfully combat poverty level and hunger index of the country.
- But, there were some instances where there were complaints of corruption in this system and also food items distributed were of poor quality.
- If these issues are resolved then it is one of most successful schemes launched by government.
