When bullet leaves the barrel of a gun it obeys newtons third law of motion.Therefore the bullet gives a pushback to the gun when shot.This is known as recoil.

when the bullet leaves the gun according to the newtons third law of motion there is a equal backward force on the gun in opp direction to the direction of bullet due to which the gun moves backward this is called the recoil of a gun
