Zinc is oxidized by losing electronsand H is reduced by gaining anelectron. The modern definition ofoxidation and reduction reactionstates that loss of electrons isoxidation and gain of electrons is areduction. Whenever reduction andoxidation occur simultaneously, suchreactions are known as redox reactions.

2222nithinp43i45: Redox reactions involve electron transfers; if one species gains electrons, another species (or more than one species) must lose electrons. For example, the redox reaction in which zinc displaces copper in an aqueous solution of copper sulfate:

CuSO4(aq) + Zn(s) → ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
In terms of electrons:

Cu2+(aq) + 2e- → Cu(s)
Reduction of Cu2+(aq)
and

Zn(s) → Zn2+(aq) + 2e-
