Stare at a point on the image for about 30 seconds. Remove the image and its negative afterimage can be seen on the white screen. Over stimulation of color receptors in the eye causes them to become "fatigued". The white screen minus the fatigued color produces the complementary color.

Retinal fatigue occurs when a person stares at an object, usually one that is brightly lit, for a long time,it is colour mixing and contrast sensitivity in eyes.
Retinal fatigue causes complementary colours to be seen in after-images.
