They are called multipurpose because once they are build they serve several purposes. The advantages and disadvantages of dams are indicated below.

Advantages:

1. They provide water for domestic, industry and irrigation purposes.
2. We get hydroelectric power from dams.
3. Dams can be used as waterways.
4. They can be used for rearing fish for human consumption.
5. Dams are used as roadways to cross rivers and save expenditures of building bridges.
6. During heavy rainfall or excess water flow, dams store water then release water during times of low natural water flow are and meet water our water requirement. So a dam serves as a means of flood control.

Disadvantages:

1. They are extremely expensive to build.
2. The must be build according to a very high standard of construction.
3. Dams flood large areas of land and submerge natural vegetations.
4. Fertile gricultural land are submerged under the water of dams.
5. People living around the dam location must be shifted and relocated.
6. Dams can cause earthquakes and landslides.
