According to the Indian constitution the state has three organs, they are legislature, executive and judiciary. This is called separation of powers.
Legislature :- This refers to the elected representatives. Laws are made in legislature.
Executive :- This refers to the smaller groups of peoples who are responsible for implementing laws and running the government.
Judiciary :- This refers to the court system in the country.

It is important to ensure that a dominant group does not use its power against other, less powerfull people and groups. It also provides safegaurds against the misuse of authority.
