A sociogram is constructed after students answer a series of questions probing for affiliations with other classmates. The diagram can then be used to identify pathways for social acceptance for misbehaving students. In this context, the resulting sociogramsare known as a friendship chart.

A sociogram is a charting of the interrelationships within a group. Its purpose is to discover group structure i.e. the basic "network" of friendship pattern and sub-group organization. The relations of any one child to the group as a whole are another type of information which can be derived from a sociogram.
