Hey Friend,

Sonnet is a form of poetry. The word SONNET is derived from Italian word sonetto meaning a little poem or song.

It is a poem of fourteen lines, set apart by a distinct form.
It is the most popular form of western lyric poetry.
It may be Petrarchan or Shakespearean, depending upon its form and style. There may be hybrid of both the conventions!

In a sonnet, the octave (first eight lines of the poem) presents an idea, raises an argument or poses a problem. The sestet (last six lines of the poem) develops out of the octave by solving the problem it poses.
A turning point occurs between the octave and the sestet.

Hope it helps!
