what do you mean by SP 2.5 hybridization

Anonymous: 2.5? , are u sure
Anonymous: we studied sp, sp2 , sp3 but never sae sp2.5
ambrishpratapsingh8: ya i am sure
Anonymous: no no this is wrong
Anonymous: do u know its meaning ?
ambrishpratapsingh8: NH3 shows SP3 hybridization when its lone pair is in plane but if its lone pair is perpendicular to the plane then it shows SP2 hybridization and when its lone pair is neither perpendicular to the plain nor in the plane then it shows SP 2.5 hybridization but I am unable to understand that how it is possible
Anonymous: yeah this is complicated
ambrishpratapsingh8: i know it is an iit mains level question
Anonymous: but it has an angle 107 if it changes its lone pair position then its bond will change isbthat posibble
ambrishpratapsingh8: when lone pair is on the plane then at that time its bond angle is affected by The Lone pair but when lone pair is perpendicular to the plane then at that time lone pair will not affect its bond angle

Orbital hybridisation. ... In chemistry, orbital hybridisation (or hybridization) is the concept of mixing atomic orbitals into new hybrid orbitals (with different energies, shapes, etc., than the component atomic orbitals) suitable for the pairing of electrons to form chemical bonds in valence bond theory.
